Researchers at UC San Francisco reviewed nearly 2,000 studies on what microplastics do once they enter the body. What they found is that these particles don't just pass through. They can accumulate in the body over time, and researchers are still working to understand the long-term effects of that buildup.

Compounds commonly found in plastic, like PFAS, sometimes called "forever chemicals", have been shown to persist in the body for years after exposure.

So when a team at the University of Birmingham decided to test 155 common beverages for microplastic contamination, coffee lovers had a reason to take note. They tested hot coffee, iced coffee, tea, juice, soft drinks. Every single sample contained microplastics. Not some. All of them.

Hot coffee averaged 43 microplastic particles per liter, and the hotter the liquid, the higher the count. The age of your machine matters too. This same study found that an eight-year-old coffee maker released more than double the microplastics of a newer one since plastic degrades over time. So the longer you've had your brewer, the more wear your plastic components have taken on.

It's worth noting, however, that the research is still developing. Long-term health effects aren't fully established yet. And while you can't control every source of microplastics in your daily life, your morning coffee is one of the easiest to fix.

That's because there's one material that doesn't leach microplastics, react to heat, or degrade, no matter how many years you use it. It's the same material used in scientific laboratories, chosen specifically because it doesn't interact with anything it touches.

And you're paying for that privilege, every single morning. If you're brewing twice a day, that's 730 paper filters a year. At $0.10 to $0.15 each, that's $73 to $110 annually. Over five years, $365 to $550. All on something that makes your coffee taste worse, not better.
